How to Prepare a Car You Don’t Drive Often for Storage

How to Prepare a Car You Don't Drive Often for Storage - Car storage units Concord - ABBA Storage

January 12, 2022 //  by ABBA Self & RV Storage

Using car storage units, Concord residents can reclaim garage space, provide a higher degree of protection, and still have their prized automobiles available whenever they want to go for a spin. Using a storage facility is a good idea, but you should prepare your car before you store it. These tips were compiled from experts from across the automobile and insurance industries,  with the intention of keeping your car in prime condition.

Check for Leaks

Fluid leaks can create dangerous and hard-to-clean puddles at car storage units. Concord residents are advised to repair them before getting a storage space. Allow your engine to dry after cleaning it and then examine it for leaks beneath or inside the engine compartment. Likely areas for older cars to leak include the power steering pump, the radiator hoses, and the oil pan.

Change the Oil

Dirty oil contains contaminants that can cause rust or corrosion in an engine that isn’t getting regular use. The best idea is to change your oil before you store the car so that the inside of your engine is kept clean and well-lubricated.

Clean the Engine

Clean your engine with a pressure washer like you will find at a D-I-Y car wash. This removes dirt, grime, and other contaminants from your engine and engine compartment, and will avoid any material from becoming stuck or staining any of the visible components. Don’t forget to clean the underside of your car while you are at it, to avoid leaving debris where the car is stored.

Use Jack Stands

Tires will begin to dry rot if they are left unused for a long period of time. You can reduce the probability of decaying tires by putting the vehicle on jack stands when it is stored. You can even release some of the tire pressure to assist in protecting them, but be sure to bring a tire inflator with you when you return.

Fill the Tank

Storing a car with very little fuel in the tank can lead to hoses deteriorating, deposits forming in the fuel lines, or filters clogging when the car is driven again. You can avoid this by topping off the tank and adding a fuel stabilizer before you store it. It helps your car while it is stored and it will be ready to ride as soon as you return.

Detail Inside and Out

Clean and use protectants on the interior of your car to keep it in great condition. This is even more important for outdoor storage as the sealants used on your interior surfaces will reduce problems caused by weather. Detailing the exterior will remove existing contaminants and protect the car’s surface during storage.

Use a Car Cover

Whether storing indoors or out, a car cover will help protect against accidental scratches. If the vehicle will be outdoors, a car cover is a must to prevent damage caused by ultraviolet light, dirt blown on the breeze, and potential water and heat damage,

Battery Maintenance

Look into using some sort of battery maintainer that will keep your battery at full charge. Maintainers are available in models that plug into electric outlets or use solar power, so you should be able to get one that is ideal for your storage situation.

Following these steps will help protect your vehicle and keep it ready for the open road any time you have the urge to start it up. In fact, even a stored vehicle will do best if it is operated for a short period every 30 days or so.
