How to Store Your Belongings During a Major Home Renovation

How to Store Your Belongings During a Major Home Renovation - self storage units in Concord - Abba Storage

June 8, 2021 //  by ABBA Self & RV Storage

A lot of planning goes into major home renovations, from the project timeline to the design blueprints. One planning aspect you don’t want to overlook is where to store all the furniture and belongings that are displaced for renovation. Couches, bed frames, tables, toys, and everything in between need to be moved out for the remodelers.

Some people simply shuffle their stuff into a separate room while others use self storage units in Concord during Bay Area home renovations. Each option has its pros and cons, but one will be the best fit for your situation.

    Designate a room for storage

The simplest thing to do could be the most stressful, but it’s a readily-available option. Before the renovation, decide what you’ll need to remove for the remodelers. Do you have a room large enough to fit all the misplaced items, or will you need to split items among multiple rooms?

You could use the garage, but most people prefer to keep their garage empty for their cars. The garage also has tracked-in dirt from tires and can expose your belongings to moisture, fluctuating temperatures, and pests. That’s especially dangerous for documentation and record storage. It’s best to use an indoor space, such as a guest room, master bedroom, or the unoccupied bedroom of a child away at college.

This is the best option if you have the space or if your renovation doesn’t require lots of displacement. Some renovations might take a few days to complete, so you won’t mind cramming your belongings wherever else they might fit. For projects that are longer or require a lot of shuffling, this might not be your best option.

Store your belongings in a friend’s or relative’s house

If your house is too small for storage, you can borrow space in another house. For the convenience of your friend or relative, only store what you truly need out of your place. If you can shuffle furniture or small belongings around, keep them at home.

Unless your friend or relative has plenty of space, it’s best to keep your belongings at a minimum. Filling their home with your belongings might be fine with them, but moving out can become a long, labor-intensive process. You’ll have to balance your schedule with theirs and take care not to damage their house as you move in and out.

Counter to using their house, you could use space in their self storage unit. This is an easier way to keep your remodeling space clear without imposing on your friends and family. However, this option isn’t the best if you aren’t close enough with your family or friends to ask this favor. Using another person’s home for storage can be intrusive.

    Rent a self storage unit

The best option for temporary storage during a remodeling is renting a self storage unit that is spacious, secure, and alleviates stress. You don’t have to worry about moving boxes or furniture collecting dust in your home or loved one’s home. You also don’t have to worry about how long you’re imposing on a friend. Self storage units are accessible during a wide range of times, usually morning to evening, and come in multiple sizes.

You might need a self storage unit if your renovation project takes several weeks to complete. It’s also best if you have to remove large furniture from the renovation area. If you’re okay with living in a cluttered home during the renovation, you probably don’t need a storage unit.

If you want a self storage unit, make sure you agree with your storage facilities contract. Some facilities offer month-to-month leasing, while others might have multi-month agreements. Try to overlap your storage contract with your renovation timeline to maximize the value of off-site storage.
