What You Should Know About Seasonal and Long-Term Car Storage

What You Should Know About Seasonal and Long-Term Car Storage - car storage - Abba Storage

September 22, 2021 //  by ABBA Self & RV Storage

If you’re using car storage units in Concord, you’re probably using it in one of two ways: seasonal or long-term. Though seasonal storage is more short term, you want to store your car, with similar care. Seasonal storage is still long-term when considering how long your car will be out of use. The same goes for RV storage and storage of summer or winter vehicular toys.

Regardless if you’re storing your car for a season or a much longer period, it’s best practice to follow the five steps below to keep your car in the best condition.

1. Wash your car’s interior and exterior

Though your car will be tucked away for some time, you should thoroughly clean it by vacuuming and dusting the interior, and oiling leather seats and appropriate components. This is primarily to make your car unattractive to rodents and other critters that might find it an appealing nest. Keeping the exterior clean, such as washing and waxing, will maintain the paint.

2. Fill the gas tank completely

If your tank is empty, moisture can accumulate inside, and the seals can dry out. A full tank will keep it moist, and adding gas stabilizer, a handy tool to keep your car functional while in storage, will maintain the effectiveness so your car is ready to go after sitting for some time.

3. Seal your car to deter nesting creatures

To further prevent critters from making a home in your car, seal up by covering openings like your tailpipe, air filters, and others. Many car owners use clean rags or old shirts for blockage. You won’t have to worry too much about critters if your car storage unit is in a secure facility.

4. Park on a water barrier or on jack stands

What’s the flooring of your car storage unit? If it’s a porous surface like unsealed concrete, you’ll want a tarp, plastic sheet, or other water barrier to prevent moisture from affecting your car’s undercarriage. You could also lift your car on jack stands to eliminate contact with the ground, and to keep your tires from flat spotting

5. Remove your battery or have it tended

Your car’s battery can still drain when the engine is off. You can preserve your battery by removing it and storing it in a clear, safe space in your storage unit. Or, you could hook it to a tender or trickle charger, which delivers enough electricity from an outlet to your battery to keep it from dying.
